Regions forecast to have significant water deficits for the 12-month period of February 2020 through January 2021 include: Chile, Brazil, French Guiana, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Areas with a forecast of significant water surplus include: Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and northern European Russia. This Watch List is based on ISciences Water Security Indicator Model v2 (WSIMv2) run on 4 May 2020.

South America: Intense water deficit in French Guiana

The forecast through June indicates that water deficits will shrink and downgrade but remain widespread. Intense deficits are forecast in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and French Guiana and Suriname. Surpluses are forecast in pockets of eastern Brazil.

Areas with a forecast of significant water surplus include: The Dakotas (US), Tanzania, Kenya, UK, Northern European Russia, and India. This Watch List is based on ISciences Water Security Indicator Model v2 (WSIMv2) run on 5 February 2020.

South America: Water deficits forecast for French Guiana, Brazil, Chile

The forecast through October indicates intense water deficits in Brazil along the Purus River, in the southern Amazon Basin, along the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers, and in eastern Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Mato Grosso, eastern Mato Grosso do Sul, western São Paulo State, and southeastern Minas Gerais. Intense deficits are also forecast for French Guiana, southern Suriname, and northern Chile. Areas of surplus include central Paraguay and northern Argentina.

South America: Water surpluses will persist in Paraguay & N. Argentina

The forecast through August 2019 indicates that water deficits in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and northwestern Brazil will downgrade considerably. However, severe to exceptional deficits are forecast for Suriname, French Guiana, and many regions of Brazil including Amapá, the southern Amazon Basin, and São Paulo State. Intense deficits will emerge tracing the Andes Mountains through Peru and into Chile. Surpluses will persist in central and eastern Paraguay and in northern Argentina.
