The forecast through June indicates that water deficits will shrink and downgrade but remain widespread. Intense deficits are forecast in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and French Guiana and Suriname. Surpluses are forecast in pockets of eastern Brazil.

South America: Water deficits in Brazil will shrink

The forecast through April indicates that water deficits will shrink considerably. However, intense deficits are forecast in Amapá, Pará, Amazonas, Rondônia, and Acre, Brazil, and French Guiana, Suriname, and Chile. Surpluses are forecast for the Orinoco Delta in eastern Venezuela.

South America: Intense water deficits forecast for NE Brazil

The forecast through November indicates that, while water deficits will continue to dominate much of the northern bulk of the continent, the extent of exceptional deficit will diminish. Moderate to severe deficits are forecast for the western Amazon Basin of Brazil and extreme to exceptional deficits in the eastern portion. Other areas of intense deficit include Pará, Maranhão, French Guiana, and northern Chile. Surpluses are forecast for central Paraguay, northern Argentina, Uruguay.

Areas with a forecast of significant water surplus include: the United States, Syria, southern Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and southeastern China.
