Mexico & Central America: Exceptional water deficits forecast for southern Mexico, Central America

Widespread exceptional water deficits are forecast for southern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, northwest Costa Rica, and western Panama. Surpluses may continue to emerge in Mexico’s northwestern state of Chihuahua. 

Mexico, Central America, Caribbean: Widespread water deficits to persist

Widespread exceptional water deficits are forecast to spread in southern Mexico, Central America, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Nearly one million people are facing a food emergency in Guatemala, Puerto Rico has instituted water restrictions, and hunger-driven crime is on the rise in Guerrero, Mexico as drought withers crops.

Central America: Water Deficits May Persist through March 2016

Water deficits are forecast to spread in southern Mexico, Central America, parts of the Caribbean, Colombia, and Venezuela. The pattern of exceptional deficit conditions is expected to persist in many of these areas through March 2016 with greatest extent and severity July through September 2015

Central America and Northern South America: Exceptional Water Deficits July 2015 through January 2016

Exceptional water deficits are forecast for Central America starting in July and continuing through January 2016. Exceptional deficits are also forecast to hit Colombia, Ecuador, and Northern Peru in late summer. The area of extreme to exceptional deficits in Venezuela expands into Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana beginning in June, with the area of greatest deficits moving southward beginning in October. A sizable portion of Northern Brazil is forecast to experience exceptional deficits beginning in December 2015.
