Exceptional water deficits are forecast to diminish considerably in the coming months, but pockets are forecast through April in southern Venezuela, Amapá (Brazil), western Brazil, western Ecuador, and around the Gulf of Corcovado in southern Chile. Deficits are also forecast in southern Colombia, northern Peru, Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), and northeastern Argentina. Surplus is forecast in northeastern Venezuela, scattered throughout eastern Brazil, northern Bolivia, and eastern Paraguay. After April, the extent of anomalous water conditions will shrink.
Global Precipitation & Temperature Outlook for June 2017
The forecast for June 2017 indicates much warmer than normal temperatures across northern South America, the Sahel, coastal West Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Indonesia, and other regions. Precipitation anomalies include much wetter than normal conditions in Gabon, northern Zambia, and Tanzania; and much drier than normal conditions in Ethiopia and Western Australia.
South America: Transitioning away from exceptional water deficits
Over the next few months South America is forecast to transition away from widespread exceptional water deficits. However, from November through January pockets of extreme to exceptional deficits are forecast in western Amazonas and central Brazil, the Cordillera Real Mountains of Bolivia, and scattered down through the nations along the Pacific Ocean, particularly Chile. Surpluses are forecast for: central and eastern Colombia, northern Bolivia, the Amazon Basin from Manaus to Amapá, eastern Paraguay into Argentina, and La Pampa, Argentina. From February to April water deficits will continue to diminish, with the exception of Chile where areas of significant deficit will persist.
Global Precipitation & Temperature Outlook for November 2016
Most noteworthy in the November 2016 Outlook is the forecast of a vast expanse of exceptionally warmer temperatures for the US Midwest and northward through Canada. Significant warm anomalies are also expected in coastal West Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, Madagascar, India's southern tip, and Southeast Asia. Exceptional dry anomalies are forecast along South America's northern Pacific coast and in southern Ethiopia. Areas forecast to experience wet anomalies include northern Brazil and northern Australia.
South America: Water deficits persist in Chile, surpluses forecast in Paraguay
South America is forecast to transition away from widespread exceptional water deficits in December. However, from September through November exceptional deficits are forecast across northern Brazil along with moderate deficits reaching southward to Rio de Janeiro. Severe to exceptional deficits are forecast near Caracas, Venezuela; western Bolivia; Chile; rivers in southern Argentina; and the Falkland Islands. Surpluses are forecast in eastern Paraguay, and Paraná and Santa Catarina, Brazil. Overall, water deficit conditions will continue to diminish in extent and severity from December through May.
