Abundant rainfall during Ethiopia’s rainy season July through September 2020 filled the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) allowing sufficient release to placate downstream neighbors, but future peace depends on more than short-lived water surpluses.
Africa: Water deficits in N Africa will downgrade
The forecast through October indicates water deficits across northern Africa. Exceptional deficits will persist in central Cameroon and western Angola and will emerge in central Zambia and near Lake Kariba. Surpluses will shrink in the Sahel and in the Kalahari Basin, but remain widespread in Tanzania.
