HEAVY RAINFALL EASES GRAND ETHIOPIAN RENAISSANCE DAM TENSIONS

Abundant rainfall during Ethiopia’s rainy season July through September 2020 filled the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) allowing sufficient release to placate downstream neighbors Egypt and Sudan. While the proverbial waters are currently calm between the Nile’s dependent users, future peace will need to build on trust and cooperation instead of short-lived water surpluses. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and ISciences used satellite imagery and hydrology data to tell the story in this “High Resolution Spotlight” published by CSIS (link below):
