DATA ANALYTICS AND TOOLS FOR ECOSECURITY (DANTE) PROJECT LAUNCHED
New Open-Source Software Platform Aims to Accelerate Environment and Security Analysis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (March 4, 2019) – ISciences announced today the start of the Data ANalytics and Tools for Ecosecurity (DANTE) project. A joint effort of ISciences, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) and North Carolina-based CASE Consultants International, DANTE aims to provide scientists, defense and security analysts, relief agencies, businesses and communities with enhanced insights into the connections between environmental stresses and security outcomes. The first of three project phases will be released under open-source licensing in August 2019.
As noted in the 2019 U.S. National Intelligence Strategy, “growing influxes of migrants, refugees and internally-displaced persons fleeing conflict zones, areas of intense economic or other resources scarcity, and areas threatened by climate change, [and] infectious disease outbreaks” are “straining the capacities of governments around the world and are likely to result in fracturing of societies.” DANTE will provide open-source software tools designed to accelerate quantitative interdisciplinary analysis of environmental stresses, demographics, economics, health, conflict areas, disaster response and national boundaries enabling analysts to better anticipate conditions that may require humanitarian relief, disaster recovery investments and conflict management responses.
“We believe in the power of evidence-based analysis to understand vulnerabilities and achieve sustainability in a rapidly changing world,” said ISciences President, Thomas M. Parris, adding, “the core strength of ISciences, LLC is the ability to bring together expertise in the physical sciences, the social sciences, and information technology to find solutions. With the launch of DANTE in partnership with CIESIN and CASE Consultants, we expect to democratize access to state-of-the-art tools for environment and security analysis and contribute to a more productive analytical enterprise.”
DANTE is a two-year research and development effort to provide an open-source software toolkit for systematic monitoring, forecasting and analysis of environmental stresses and their impacts on security outcomes. The initial focus for DANTE will address the role of environmental stressors in three key areas: international migration and refugee flows; internal migration and isolated populations; and conflict and political instability.
